Fundraiser Launches Gavrilov Dance Program for Special Needs Kids
An inaugural benefit, Speechless, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., May 16, at Hudson Dance Studio, in Edgewater, New Jersey, to help fund and raise awareness of a new ballroom dance program for special needs children created by Alexey Gavrilov, founder of Gavrilov Dance. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The program is patterned on those he established in Seattle, Washington, and Orange County, California. The studio is accessible by the New York Waterway-Edgewater Ferry landing stop, and Gavrilov hopes to enlist children from both sides of the river to reach their creative dreams.
Two years ago, Gavrilov met a 9-year-old Seattle girl with a physical disability and a seemingly impossible dream: she wanted to learn ballroom dancing. Although he worried about her limitations, Gavrilov took her on as a student, and she danced on stage for the first time to a standing ovation.
