Dentistry Misconceptions
Dental anxiety often arises from misconceptions about dentistry, but advancements in techniques and technology have made the field more patient-friendly and less intimidating. Although some procedures may cause discomfort, modern methods have made great advancements in pain management. Dentists today use new techniques and tools to minimize or eliminate pain during procedures, and local anesthesia is commonly administered to numb the area being treated. Other sedation dentistry techniques such as laughing gas (nitrous oxide) or oral sedation can be used to relax patients.
The fear of needles is a common phobia, but dentists now use smaller, thinner needles designed to minimize discomfort. They also use topical numbing gels to desensitize the area before administering the anesthesia. Dental drills, associated with a loud, high-pitched noise, can induce anxiety in some patients, but quieter, more efficient high-speed drills are less intimidating. Some dental clinics even offer noise-canceling headphones or play relaxing music to drown out the sound.
While certain complex treatments may require multiple visits, advancements in dentistry have made several procedures faster and more efficient. Digital imaging techniques such as 3-D scanning and CAD/CAM technology obtain detailed impressions and fabricate restorations in less time and dental lasers expedite certain procedures and reduce healing time.
Dentists and dental professionals are compassionate people, too. They understand that anxiety is a common concern and strive to create a comfortable and calming environment for patients. Cozy waiting areas, soothing decor and friendly staff all help patients feel at ease. Communication is key.
