Fear is Not the Boss of Us

Society’s collective mind can only be healed with compassion for ourselves and our own anger, hatred, judgment and fear that will allow us to then extend it to others. We can choose to wake up today or 10 or 100 years from now. The outcome is inevitable; the length of our suffering is our choice.

Fear always speaks with a loud, intense and extreme voice. It is volatile, constricting, appearing as, yet not consistent with, truth, and fear loves itself. Fear is inconsistent, telling us one thing and then another. It feeds on itself and only grows stronger when we resist it. Fear separates, shuts down, dismisses, manages, overthinks, projects, blames and ignores. Interestingly, fear just wants to be heard because fear is well…fear. Fear is terribly afraid.

Compassion, on the other hand, is a stronger, yet often more subdued voice, because it doesn’t get as much attention as fear. It is centered, it is clear, it is accepting. It is warm, curious and honest. It is trustworthy, consistent and tolerant. Compassion holds steady, even in the most difficult of times. It is the steady, loving force beneath the intensity of fear. Compassion doesn’t need attention, fame or power. Compassion is attention. It is power. Compassion is already rich with worth. It joins us. It is greater than any system. Compassion acknowledges that when one person is hurting, we need to take care of this person, not deprive them.

We can be the vehicle of fear or the vehicle of compassion, and when we are the vehicle of compassion, we can listen to the fear, but we don’t have to act on it.
