Resolve to Get Better Sleep in the New Year

by Brielle Bleeker

One month into the new year, many people might be finding their “new year, new you” resolutions coming to a screeching halt. It is difficult to stick with change, particularly change that involves diet and exercise. But a much easier resolution to maintain is focusing on going green in the home and the bedroom, in particular.

The going green revolution tends to focus on greening cleaning products, personal care products and food. All too often, other important aspects are forgotten, such as the bedroom. We spend one-third of our lives in the bedroom, so it should naturally be a healthy and green area in which to relax and breathe easily.

Simple steps can help to ensure the bedroom is an eco-friendly and sustainable environment. A great way to naturally purify the bedroom while adding some eye-appeal is to us plants as part of the room décor; they help to improve air quality and remove toxins from the room.

Paint containing volatile organic compounds  (VOC) have a harsh smell, and the off-gassing it produces can lead to respiratory issues. Switching to LED lightbulbs can help reduce the amount of electricity regular incandescent bulbs use.

There are many green options to choose from when it comes to selecting bedroom furniture. Pre-owned is a great option; not only does the furniture avoid being added to a landfill, but it can often be repurposed to get an entirely new look. Solid wood furniture is a better alternative to particle board, as that material can also emit off-gassing, potentially causing health problems. When opting for a rug or carpeting, consider natural materials such as wool or jute over petroleum-based synthetics

One of the best ways to green the bedroom is to choose a mattress made from natural materials such as latex. They are made with naturally sourced and sustainable ingredients. An organic mattress can last 25 years and is recyclable. Healthy Choice Organic Mattress, in Ridgewood, is trying to change the way people think about their mattress. Standard mattresses consist of a variety of chemical components, including flame retardants, which can get absorbed by the skin while you sleep.

Healthy Choice makes their mattresses with all-natural, organic materials, including organic cotton, wool and natural rubber. A mattress made of high-quality organic and all-natural materials can help create years of comfortable, supportive and healthy sleep.

Research has shown that better sleep can lead to better health. Focus this new year on a resolution to can stick with; creating a healthy and sustainable environment in the bedroom.

Healthy Choice Organic Mattress is located at 14 Wilsey Square, in Ridgewood. For more information, call 201-857-3245 or visit hcmattress.com.
