0Holistic Strategies for Better Health
by Nicolette Cothron
Becoming healthy is a goal that many of us strive for; however, the specifics surrounding this venture can be somewhat ambiguous. We learn that proper nutrition and consistent exercise are very important elements; but there are other lifestyle factors that also have a substantial impact. When we get healthier, we need to consider a holistic approach. In addition to physical activity and dietary habits, it is also essential to consider chronic stress levels, social relationships, environmental toxicity and rest. If we eat a meal that is full of nutrient-dense foods, but are eating quickly and under stress, our bodies go into sympathetic stress response and the nutritional benefits of the meal are largely negated.
When the body is in stress response, or “fight-or-flight” mode, our digestive capacity is significantly weakened. Over time, when we eat and live in a constant state of stress, there is an increase of cortisol and insulin, inflammation and a decreased ability to lose body fat and gain muscle tissue. Once we establish a habit of eating in a relaxed, or parasympathetic mode, our body is in its optimal metabolic state for maximum digestion, muscle building, calorie burning and nutrient assimilation. One simple strategy to bring to ourselves into a relaxed state prior to eating is to sit quietly and take five to 10 slow, deep breaths. It is equally important to slow down with our meals and mindfully savor the experience.
In addition, if we are eating right and exercising, but are exposed to excessive environmental or household toxins and contaminated drinking water, our health will likely be negatively impacted. A more holistic approach to health is not only maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly, but drinking and bathing in clean or purified water, cultivating healthy relationships, getting adequate rest and minimizing stress levels.
Health and wellness does not occur overnight, but we can begin to make healthier choices one step at a time; our bodies and minds will undeniably reflect the positive changes and dedication.
