0Deaf Yoga Classes with Geeta Sagar
Geeta Sagar, of Deaf Yoga, will be offering deaf yoga classes every second and fourth Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon, at The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center, in the Chelsea District of New York City.
Sagar helps deaf people be more comfortable because all of her classes are in American Sign Language. “In a regular hearing class, a deaf person may not be able to relax, because he or she doesn’t know when to open their eyes and have to constantly watch the teacher or other students to follow,” she says. “In a deaf yoga class, it’s all silence and it’s all visual. They can close their eyes and relax, and when it’s time for them to open their eyes, I go to each person and either slightly tap their shoulder or pound the floor so they can feel the vibration.”
Cost: $12 for a yoga class (limit of 10); $10 additional for vegetarian lunch. Location: 243 W. 24th St. For more information or to RSVP (required for both), email DeafYogeeta@gmail.com or visit DeafYoga.Org.
