0Dr. Magwood Innovates with IM=X Pilates
The Pure Balance Center of Clifton is offering one of today’s most innovative methods of proactive, preventative care, IM=X Pilates, a fitness formula that marries the muscle toning and lengthening benefits of Pilates with strength and cardio training to increase flexibility endurance and muscle tone, while strengthening the spine and abdominal core at the same time.
Michael Magwood, DC, owner of the Pure Balance Center of Clifton, enthusiastically jumped at the chance to add IM=X when he first heard about it, saying, “The main reason we started the Pilates studio was to give people an opportunity to be handheld and taken from the room of healing to the room of physical fitness.”
Magwood wants people to not depend so much on doctors or chiropractors. “Hopefully, we get people to the point where they are not being treated for anything, they are just being tuned up,” he explains. “What I teach people is ultimately, nobody is going to care about them more than themselves, and that the role of a doctor should be to teach people how not to need doctors to the same extent.”
The doctor uses a variety of techniques to help his patients reach optimal health levels, including relaxation breathing technique classes and wellness workshops. Real Body Bootcamp, owned by his associate, Bernadette Silva, is a total body workout for men and women that incorporates athletic conditioning methods from soccer, football and boxing drills.
Magwood also specializes in pediatric care and has received specialized training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. He believes that children should be checked as soon as possible after they are born because of the potentially damaging effects of the birth process. Mothers are aware of the stress of giving birth, but even natural, uncomplicated deliveries result in trauma to the infant. Studies show that many children that experience symptoms of colic, ear infections and asthma have spinal subluxations that impair nervous system function.
Early detection and correction can prevent damage from occurring in a child’s nascent nervous system. If left unchecked, this damage is compounded through years of negative adaptations and compensating habits, leading to prolonged care and treatment later in life.
The force used during the adjustment of a newborn is a fraction of that experienced during the birthing process. Even a natural birth subjects the neck of a newborn to 40 pounds of traction or torsion. The newborn adjustment requires only few ounces of carefully directed pressure in the right direction at the precisely the right time, so parents can feel confident about the safety of chiropractic for their child.
