About 12 years ago, my brother stated that in the near future, “organic food, preventative medicine and environmentalism will be the new religion.” This statement stuck in my mind because his more profound insights tend to usually be accurate. I sometimes refer to him as a walking encyclopedia of health-related topics because of his passion for gathering and sharing this good information.
At the center of this “health explosion” or “new religion” in New Jersey are the New York Giants. The four-time Super Bowl champions and their broadcast partner, NBC 4 New York, are teaming up to host the very first family-friendly Health & Fitness Expo, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, at MetLife Stadium. Admission and parking is free. That’s right, free! …further evidence that things are shifting for the better. Pat and I will be manning a booth there, along with three or more Natural Awakenings publishers from the surrounding counties. See the NewsBrief article on page 10 for more event details and stop by and pay us a visit.
Hackensack University Medical Center, considered the leader in the tri-state area in integrative and preventative medicine, is currently constructing a 112,000-square-foot wellness center in Maywood, which is set to open in December. The center will be “powered by The New York Giants,” as they say. During a recent interview with Natural Awakenings, Hackensack UMC Senior Operations Officer Mark Sparta, who heads the project, informed us that the Giants are assisting with the fitness programs being created for the center, and they will also play an important part in promoting the wellness initiatives that will be offered. More details will follow in an expanded article in our next issue of Natural Awakenings.
Whole Foods is committed to opening a new store in the troubled Closter Plaza, in Closter, in 2014, and also has its sights set on a location on Route 46, in Parsippany. We also hear that sales at Whole Foods are consistently up year over year, and according to the Organic Trade Association, “Driven by consumer choice, the U.S. organic industry sales are growing by roughly 10 percent each year.”
It’s time to take notice when some of the players in the market begin to aggressively expand right in our own backyard. We believe that we’re well into the momentum phase of changing our society for the better. The increasing collective market demand for safer, healthier and more effective products and services will take care of the rest.
In peace, health and much happiness.
